The key to success is making something that is valuable to someone else, and for which they are willing to pay you money. Do that, and you shall be well on your way to becoming an entrepreneur.
Firstly, you need to determine the right kind of business to start. You should, however, know that this could change as time goes by because your first business or businesses may fail and you may have to switch to something that works better. This shift in direction is known as pivoting among entrepreneurs. That said, your first business, is an excellent way to learn how to become an entrepreneur.
To do this, you need to determine the type of business that is best suited to the kind of person that you are. If you are extroverted, you could go for a business that lets you go out there and meet customers on a daily basis, such as selling physical goods. On the other hand, if you are introverted and are passionate about technology, you could start a software development shop where you write code all day and only interact with customers when necessary.
Secondly, make a plan. Knowing what you want to achieve with the business is crucial. If you do not know what you want, then it is unlikely that you shall achieve it. A business plan is important for reasons other than are popularly touted. One thing you should recognize is that a detailed business plan does not necessarily paint an accurate picture of the future. It is commonly acknowledged that as soon as you make a plan it changes. A business plan is essential because it forces you to ask yourself the hard questions about your business as you write it. Questions relating to issues such as the pricing of your product or service, anticipated expenses, and forecasted profitability. In making your plan, you should consider the product or service that you are going to offer, the market you intend to serve, your obligations to your customers, and specific goals you want to achieve within specific timelines.
The third course of action is to collect as much data about your target market as possible. Collecting customer data is important because your market is key to your business. As we had stated at the beginning of the article, you need to make a product that is valuable to your market and for which they are willing to give you money. Create a minimum viable version of your product or service and go out there and determine if potential customers are willing to pay money for it. This is called validating the market. You then incorporate their feedback into your product or service to make sure that the customers shall want to pay money for a more refined version of your product. You then drill down to answering specific questions such as the size of your market, the demographics of your market, and how your product or service is relevant to the customers' everyday lives.
The final undertaking is to get the word out. You can achieve this by meeting customers, traditional media or social media. Social media provides a low-cost platform for getting the word out on your product efficiently. You can, for example, look up communities related to your product or service on social media and focus your outreach efforts there. This usually costs little to no money. Traditional media includes channels such as newspaper, radio and television advertisements. They are more expensive than social media but can be utilized in reaching out to a broader audience such as a whole country or a whole state. Traditional media can also be used to reach out to older members of the population who do not utilize social media as much as the younger people. Most importantly, you need to go out and talk to the customers yourself because by doing so you get to collect more feedback about your product as compared to what you would obtain by reaching out to customers via social media or traditional media.
In addition to doing the above, you also need you need to build a support network. Reach out to as many entrepreneurs as you can by, for example, joining entrepreneur associations or your local chamber of commerce. These come in handy during the tough times and can be the difference between failure and success. If you do the above things, you shall be well on your way to becoming an entrepreneur.
